WELL-KNOWN MAORI DROWNED I'EK PRESS -AseiOOIATIGM. Rotorua, January 17. Wi Whaitiri, a prominent Maori of Taheke, was drowned in the Katuna River below the Okere Falls. He was shag shooting on Sunday afternoon, and he swam to retrieve a bird, but was swept away by the current. The body has not been recovered. A NARROW ESCAPE. .Nelson, January 17. While endeavouring to avoid injuring a child who ran across the road at Richmond crossing this afternoon, a motor-car driver had his attention diverted from an approaching train and the car struck the engine. Of five occupants of the car one girl, aged 12 years, named Rhodes, residing at Motueka, was rather seriously injured, the flesh being stripped from her leg by the wheels of the engine. She had a miraculous escape from death. None of the other occupants of the car was seriously injured. THREE AUCKLAND ITEMS.

A boatman named William Anscombe died in the Auckland Hospital from injuries sustained by tailing from a ladder on the wharf. He was a widower aged 53, and employed by the Harbour Board for some years. A seaman named Thomas Crawley (25) was found in the harbour under circumstances that point to attempted suicide. He was rescued, but complained of not being permitted to drown and asked for a dose of poison. He said \u had been refused work and was tired of.life. Alfred Richard Briggs, an elderly man, who had a fall on the stairway of a. restaurant, was admitted to the hospital, He had a deep cut on his head and is in a critical condition.
