' Between the Courtine and Mesuil heights, the French counter-attacked with the greatest dash. The Germans had no time to fortify their now positions and were utterly unable to defend themselves. A great number surrendered, and those attempting to flee were decimated by the French artillery. Jt is evident that there were picked Germans among the 60,000 attackers, as the prisoners include many Imperial Guardsmen. The number of German dead left alter the attack and coun-ter-attack was enormous, and the nnmliers of prisoners taken were important.
