A RIOT OF GAMBLING. THE HOLIDAY RECORD. : We (Otago Daily Times) have compiled a list, which is not purported to jhQ complete, two or three meetings being omitted from it, to show the -extent to which a section of the pubhie of New Zealand has indulged ma l.riot N of gambling during the holidays. .The list comprises no meetings that were held before December 27, so that lit represents the results of a week's 'racing in the Dominion. It shows [that the amounts invested «t twentythree meetings during he brief period .totalled £831,780 10s, as follows: ■

A-conservative estimate of the ''investments" at the ' meetings which have not been included in the above table will bring the total to £850.000 or more. The figures are illustrative, of course, of the prosperity that is being enjoyed by the Dominion—a prosperity for which we are indebted to the might of the British Navy. But the moralist, and not only the moralist, may find in them an evidence of extravagance and wastefulness at a time when, economy is the policy that should he observed by all prudent people. The figures furnish, moreover, a. fresh indication of the existence of a large taxable margin in the country.
