The recruiting cards which are flawing in show that a large percentage are unwilling to enlist, giving various excuses .such as the internment of all Germans and when »conscrip'.ion comes, while many gave evasive and impertinent replies.
FLYING CORPS FOR MESOPOTAMIA. Melbourne, January 12. In reply to the Indian Government's request the Commonwealth is dispatching v. wireless corps to Mesopotamia, consisting of fifty-three officers and men. EMDEN PAST SALVING. (Received 9.20 a.m.) Melbourne, January 12. Mr Jensen, referring to the salving of the Emden. states that Mr Protor, who was sent to Cocos Island to report on the possibility of the scheme, found that the stern half of the Emden had disappeared, and the heavy surf was breaking the remainder. It was now impossible to salvo the vessel.
