GENERAL JOFFRE'S OPTIMISM. fUnited Pkess Association. 1 Paris, January a. General Joffre, in a stirring Army Order, sayf the Allies' strength is growing incesanstly, and \ve are holding uncontested the command of the seas. Germany is compelled to holster up weakened Austria, and is now seeing in secondary theatres easy ephemeral successes. She has given up attempting the principal fronts. ALLIES ACTIVITY AT MANY POINTS. DOUAI BOMBARDED. The High Commissioner reports:— London, January 5 (2.55 p.m.) Between Soissons and Ilheims we damaged the enemy works severely. In the Champagne destructives were used to overturn German trenches at many points, and munition depots were exploded. On the southern portions of the front, the artillery on both sides- is more active. A British aeroplane carried out successfully a bombarding ra;i(d on the enemy aerodrome at Douai, in the Nord district. A German aeroplane to-day flew over Boulogne and dropped a few bombs without doing damage. GERMAN REPORT ON ATTACK ON DOUAI. (Received 1.25 p.m.) Berlin, January 6.
Official.—The Allied aerial attack on Douai failed. Two British aeroplanes were shot down.
