We wrecked enemy trenches northeast of Altkireb and blew up an ammunition depot. London, January 5. General Haig reports: We silenced two German howitzer .batteries in the Armentieres region' and dispersed German work parties north-east of Ypres. Our lire prevented, the enemy attack developing north of Albert, ARTILLERY BATTLE AT DIXMUDE. GRENADE FIGHTING AT STEENSTRAETE. (Received 1 p.m.) Paris, January 5. A Belgian communique states:There has been a violent artillery battle in the Dixmude sector, and an advantageous tight with hand grenades at Steenstraete. THE GERMAN COMMUNIQUE. (Received 1 p.m.) Berlin, January 5. officia l __ Considerable lighting with artillery and mines occurred !along the Franco-Belgian front, but the "results have not been given in detail.
