PERSONAL.

The Prince of Wales has been appointed chairman of the War Pensions Statutory Committee .

The Rev. John Craig, Minister of St. Columbia's Church, Fairlie, and Mrs Craig, who are spending a holiday in Taranaki, are f at present staying with Mr and Mrs E. Meuli, "Helvetia." Huiroa.

Captain W. H. Hawkins, who for some time past has been fanning in the Oakura district, left by the «ha»t train yesterday for Trentham, his services having been accepted by the Defence Department.

Mr W. H. Howlett, of Mangaweka, has been appointed electrical engineer to the Inglewood Borough Council, in succession to Mr C. Hubbard, who recently resigned. Some years ago Mr Howlett was a member of the electrical staff at the New Plymouth" powerhouse.

Mr W. H. Matthews, of Inglewood. who enlisted some three months ago, received a wire on Tuesday (states the Record), asking if he could go into Trentham on or before January B—a whole four days' notice in which to complete business arrangements! Truly the Defence Department has peculiar methods. Mr Matthews, of course, was compelled to reply that the notice, was altogether too short.

Lord Burnham is seriously ill, states a London cablegram. Lord Burnham, K.C.Y.0., who is the principal proprietor of the "Daily Telegraph," is a son of the late, T. M. Levy, one of the founders of the cheap Press. After leaving London University College, he was apprenticed to his father's printing-office. He took prominent part in the reoeal of the paper duties, in organising funds for the relief of the Lancashire Cotton Famine and also in sending Sir H. M. Stanley, Sir H. Johnston and the late Mi- Cieorge Smith on exploring expeditions.
