LOST AMERICAN CONSUL.

Tile loss, of Mr MeNelly (American Consul at Aden) will probably provoke an incident of unprecedented gravity in the Gerniano-American controversy. He was a young man, engaged to be married, and was taking up his first official post. He intended taking an earlier steamer, but was fascinated by London and remained longer. If he is lost he is the first official American victim of piracy. He was a personal friend of the American Consul-General, who is urgently cabling to London for particulars, and also intimating that Charles Grant, a Bostonite, was aboard. j SINKING OF THE CLENCYLL. London, January 3. Of the Glengyll’s complement, one hundred and four of the crew, about 10 passengers, the second officer, steward, second gunner, and seven Chinese are missing. She had a valuable cargo of butter and eggs, and before leaving took on a gun for defensive purposes. The captain has landed at Malta. Only ten of the crew are missing. STEAMER'S NARROW ESCAPE. London, January 3. The City of Marseilles has arrived at Bombay. On December 8 she encountered a German submarine in the ' Mediterranean, off the Sardina coast, three and a-half miles on the starboard side.
Without warning the submarine fired the first shot fragments scattering the deck. The vessel was sent ahead at maximum speed , and a second shot barely missed the rudder, falling astern. The submarine continued firing, without hitting. The ship replied with eight shots, and the submarine with six more. Then the submarine disappeared, listing to port. The passengers, with lifebelts on, assembled in the saloon, in case it was necessary to take to the boats, but there wag no panic. LondbfirJanuary 3. Reuter’s agent interviewed a, missionary named Mr Mortimer, who was aboard the City of Marseilles. He says that seven shells were 1 filed, the submarine using both guns. The passengers donned lifebelts and were ordered to the saloon, where they, sang, “Jesn, Lover of My Soul,” and then had prayers. ' When a message came that they were sale they cheered aha sang the National Anthem., The submarine pursued the"'ship for twenty minutes, and one shell passed with ip four feet of the captain. London, January 3. The Greek steamer Saloimha, iron laden and bound for Glasgow, was seen near Tarifa envelojied iir flames..; B is believed that she foundered. The crew were taken off. P. AND 0. COMPANY’S LOSS. London, January 4. The Peninsula and Oriental Company’s steamer Geelong was sunk in the Mediterranean by collision with an Admiralty store ship. There was no loss of life. PRESS COMMENT. Washington, January 3. President Wilson has curtailed his honeymoon owing to ibhe gravity of the-situation, and is returning immediately. , It is known that four Americans were aboard, but only one is yef reported as saved.
The Austrian Ambassador hastened with the assurance that Vienna would quickly and satisfactorily adjust if it was proved that it was the act of all Austrian submarine. Mr Lansing has instructed the American Ambassador at Vienna to ask for information.
The New York Times publishes a cartoon of President Wilson uncovering a typewriter, with the sarcastic comment, “The Usual Remedy!” London, January 8.
Tlie London correspondent of the New Y'ork Herald states that the whole world is awaiting what President Wilson will do concerning the Persia. The crime was committed while the President was reading the blocking answer to his Ancona Note. The time for words has passed, and the hour for action struck.
