ARRIVAL OF THE MAHENO, MUCH ENTERIC ABOARD. Per Press Association. Auckland, January 1. The Maheno, with 317 sick and .rounded' aboard, arrived at 1.40 a.m. mcl anchored in the stream. Surgeon-General Henderson,' )r. Valin tine, and Captain Lewis (inipector of Military Hospitals) boarded Jie vessel on arrival, and the Gnverior. Hon. CL W. Russell, General Robin and Colonel Hume followed later. Every patient was carefully examined before the vessel was allowed to berth, in order to effectively isolate all enteric carriers. Thousands throng’d the neighborhood of the wharves, but' the jetties were closed to all except'holders of next-of-kin passes. A long line of motors, supplied by the Motor Reserve, was waiting to take the patients to the civic reception, and later to their homes or to the hospitals. The official luncheon was held in the Town Hall, During the afternoon the Governor and Mayor welcomed the men home, congratulating them on their feats at Gallipoli. Of the Malieuo’s complement, sixty are for Wellington and 50 for South Island. There were 189 enteric cases aboard, and all have been landed and : ablated in the Auckland hospital grounds until the doctors can determine which are lit lor release.
