SPORTING.

STRATFORD RAGES. The Stratford Racing Club holds its annual meeting on Saturday next, and the lollowing Monday. All arrangements are oil in h. nd, and everything points to another successful meeting. The quality and number of the horses engaged ensure good sport. The Wanganui Garrison Baud will be a attendance. The Club is sure to -iaintaui its policy of full attention to visitors’ requirements, and details always run smoothly at Stratford. The track is in splendid order, and fast times should be recorded. A record attendance is anticipated. NEW PLYMOUTH RACES. For the first day of the Christmas meeting, the weather was somewhat mixed, slight rain showers falling at intervals, but there was no real downpour until the starting time of the last race, when all hands were driven to shelter. The large crowd present were a good-natured, sober, and apparently happy under all the circumstances, and the holiday was marked with the usual festive greetings. The racing was interesting throughout, and the arrangements generally were up to the Club’s previous high standard. Speculation was brisk, and at the conclusion of the meeting the sum of £18,903 had been put through the totalisator, as against e1(J,279 on the first day last year. Aagaard’s b m Corliee, 9.4 (Webb), 2; 1 Mr C. Gordon’s ch 1 m White Plume, 10.3 (Gordon) 3. Also started: 7 Euroco 10.8, 2 Epivorth 10.0, 3 Taugiwai 9.7, 5 Royal Patron 9.5, 6 Knocknagow 9.0 (carried 9.4), 7 Joy' Bells 9.0, 9 Master Catesby 9.0 (carried 9.5). Cornice led over the first hurdle, followed by Joy Bells, I'angiwai, White Plume and Epworth, iu that order. At the bend Epworth ran up and was running third at the stand hurdles, when ho fell, his jockey fortunately escaping injury. Cornice

Royal Chef led to the straight, but at the distance Bisognc headed the leader and won nearly by a length. Veto was fourth. Time, linin 3sec. Nearing the High School bend the favorite moved forward into second place, and in a fine finish secured the verdict by a head, half a length separating second and third. Time, 2min 13sec.

Lepperton Welter Hack Handicap, of lOOsovs., seven furlongs.—(3 Mr H. W. Johnston’s ch m Florist (Lupin—Daisy Faa), aged 9.10 (j. McLean), 1 ; 1 Mr R. Hicks’ !> h Syntax, 9.0 (McCarten), 2; 3 Mr J. Turning into the home run the order was Florist, Glacier, Syntax and Classis. A splendid race resulted in heads separating the three placed horses. Time, Imin 32sec.
