PERSONAL.
The report that Madame Sarah Bernhardt is critically ill ia untrue, states a Paris cable. Major W. F. G. Levin, of Greatford, has been dangerously wounded. Ho left with the 2nd .Reinforcements, Lieutenant Buckley has been appointed judge of the band contest to bo held at Napier in connection with the Mardi Gras. Colonel Foster, of the Sydney University, has been appointed Chief of the Australian General Staff, states a cablegram from Sydney to-day. Mr A. D. Stanley has been appointed Stratford agent for the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation, Ltd., vice Mr A. Coleman icsigued. Mr F. Clouston, formerly of the National Bank of New Zealand’s Stratford branch, is spending his holidays' in Stratford. The death is reported from Sydney of Mr W. W. Young, an ex-member of the Assembly, at Bathhurst. Deceased formerly resided on the WestCoast of New Zealand. Mr Dribble, Field Instructor, Department of Agriculture, is at present on a visit to the Stratford district, making an inspection of the co-opera-tive experimental plots. Nurse Jean Sinclair, who was ia the wreck of the Marquette, and who is now in the 19th General Hospital, Alexandria, suffering from enteric, is improving slowly.
The Right Hou. Sir Joseph Ward, Minister of Finance, has partially recovered from his recent indisposition, and was able to attend at his office on Wednesday. Mr Esau Pretty, the well-known axeman and athlete, has volunteered for active service. He has had 18 years’ military experience and holds the rank of sergeant. The engagement is announced of Commander E. R. 0. R. Evans, C. 8., R.N., of Hf.M.S. Viking, second in command of Captain Scott’s Antarctic Expedition to Miss Elsa Andvord, of Christiania.
Dr. Barclay, medical superintendent of Wellington hospital, has been granted six months’ leave in order to join the Maheno’s staff. Dr. Morice will fill Dr. Barclay’s position temporarily.
Mr Hooker, of Hawera, received a cable last evening from his sister, Nurse Hooker, who was in the Marquette tragedy and has been ill in hospital since then, stating that she is progressing favourably, and will be returning to New Zealand shortly.
Mr A. H. Trotter, of Stratford, has just received word that his brother, Robert Trotter, who went from Stratford with the sth Reinforcements, is in hospital in London. No previous word had been received of him, and this advice is a great relief to In's people and friends. It is not known whether Private Trotter is sick or wounded.
