A very peculiar eel, not known to local fishermen, was caught recently near the Babbit island by Mr J. rr. Gross'! (says the Nelson Colonist). Its length is 3U inches. The tail, unlike that of an ordinary eel, tapers off to a hn e point, while certain tins usually found on eels are missing on this one. The color of the upper part of us body is pale brown, the under part being almost white, while a narrow white fin runs the full length of its back. The creature has been preserved in formalin, and placed in the Nelson Institute Museum.
A Chinese named Ah Nee, who died the other day (says the Sydney Daily Telegraph), came to Australia with the late Mr J. L. Brown, the original owner of Tonderburine Station, with three other of his countrymen, in 1830. The voyage took seven months to accomplish in a small sailing vessel. Ah Nee was then considered to be 32 years of age, so that would make him, at the time of his death, 117. For the past 60 years he has been with the Ferguson family, and for nearly half a century with Mr Peter Ferguson, of Gulargambone Station. Being a faithful employee in his early life, Mr Ferguson made every provision for hi s declining years. He erected a comfortable cottage for him on the station, and provided an attendant to look after him.
