HOLIDAY FARE.
WHERE TO SPEND CHRISTMAS. NEW PLYMOUTH RACES. ; ’ The Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting on Monday and Thursday, will, as usual attract a large attendance of “sports” from Stratford. This Club has had considerable success of late years, as the outcome of a policy of progressive management. The prizemoney during recent years has been a ' growing attraction to owners of ‘ top notch”, racehorses. The profits derived from the Club’s meeting will be handed over to the Patriotic Fund, /fhe train arrangements, which are very convenient for visitors from these parts, will be found in pur advertising columns.
ELTHAM CARNIVAL. The New Zealand Axemen Association’s fifteenth annual gathering will fie held ip. Eltham on Boxing Day (Monday). 'As in the past, numerous ■side shows will be on the ground, and efforts are being made to find plenty of amusement for the children. On this score, the 'secretary has laid in a stock of’ toys to be distributed amongst the little ones. The best axemen and sawyers in New Zealand ~ will be competing, and the contestants are reported to be in good condition, so- some very fast times should be registered. For the cycling events, large entries have been received, and Alf. Parkes (one-time grass-bank champion), Griffin, and other riders should make the races well worth journeying the distance to witness. Suitable train arrangements for travellers, from all parts of Taranaki have made. The Eltham band will be - in attendance, and providing the meeting is favored with fine weather, the - Carnival of 1915 should prove very enjoyable.
STRATFORD MOUNTAIN HOUSE. iW Stratford Mountain' House, as . in previous years, is sure to prove a draw to visitors to the district at Christmas time. The distance to the ; House by road is only nine miles, but f .the magnificent gorges, stfow-capped peaks and slopes, and the surrounding forests reserves must he seen to be M appreciated. The house offers good accjpmmodation at a very . moderate ’charge, and this year will be in ■ charge of Mr H. Elliott, who comes i the position with splendid recommendations as a host.
