NGAERE SCHOOL.
BREAKING-UP CEREMONY. The breaking-up for the holidays at tlie Ngaere School took the form of a garden party at the Ngaere Gardens, which were kindly placed, at the disposal of the School Committee. A large number of people were present. After lunch the party assembled on the lawn and Mr H. Taylor (chairman of the School Committee), presented the prizes for the temperance -essays, given by the local branch of the W.C. T.U. The following pupils gained prizes:—Standard Vl,—lst, Ivor Saunders; 2nd, Oliver Orr. Standard V.—lst, Marjorie Truelove; 2nd, Phyllis Sims. Standard IV.—lst, Joyce Harrison; 2nd, John Payne. Standard lll.—lst, Elsie Lambert; 2nd, Violet McKenzie. The good attendance certificates given by the Education Department to pupils who have been absent not more than five times have not yet come to hand, as the Government prniter has not been able to get them printed in time for distribution before the holidays. Thd following pupils made full attendance: —lvor Saunders, Aubrey Kenyon, Rae Jones, Ivy Kenyon, Florence Walker. Others who have been absent not more than five times were :—Meriton Taylor, Stanley Bond, Phyllis Sims, Violet McKenzie, Ellen Wiggins. One girl, Ivy Kenyon, had not missed one day for four years, which is a very meritorious performance. The Committee intend giving attendance prizes, which will be handed to the winners after the holidays. Miss M. Mackie, who has been probationer at the school for the past two years, is now leaving to take up a position as assistant mistress at Tarata. The Chairman referred to Miss Mackie’s good wm;k in the school and to th- Esteem in which she is held ( find presented her with a variable dressing case. Mr Sims, headmaster, returned thanks on behalf of Miss Mackie, and spoke highly of her work ns a teacher, wishing her success in the future. Cheers were given for Miss Mackie. The Chairman, on behalf of the senior boys, then presented the headmaster, Mr Sims, with a silver-moun-ted tobacco pouch as a memento from the boys who are leaving the school, and as some small recognition of their gratitude and respect for their headmaster.
The Chairman thanked the proprietor for his kindness in giving the use of the gardens for the day, and hearty cheers were given hy the children. The afternoon was very pleasantly spent with games and races for the children, paddling at the miniature seaside, and bathing in the lake, and all were given rdes on the waterchute, ' ,
