The Telegraph Office closes at eight o’clock, the nominations this year create a record, and it is expected that the majority of the nominators will accept. The increased nominations are doubtless due to the increasing popularity of the meeting, which is fast becoming the best meeting in Taranaki. The turf is in splendid condition, and the grounds arc in perfect order. The presence of the famous Wanganui Garrison Band will attract many alone. The 1918 meeting should bo a record one, and the Patriotic Funds benefit considerably.

COUNTRY BELLE’S RECORD. Close on 500 people put in an appearance at on Thursday morning (says the Sun) to witness an attempt by Country Belle to lower the existing mile record of 2min 8 3-ssec, held conjointly by King Cole and Emmeline. At 6 o’clock, when the test was to have been made, the weather conditions were just perfect, there being an absence of wind and clear atmosphere. By the time Mr Moreland and his great mare appeared on the track, however, there was a fairly strong nor’-wester blowing, but otherwise everything was quite favorable. After being warmed up, Country Belle, driven by her owner and with the assistance of E. Holmes on the galloper Kingsway, dashed oh from the mile post at nearly a two-minute clip. Striding out very freely she reached the first quarter pole in 30 3-ssec, and dashed past the half in Imiu 2sec, still going well within herself. So strongly was she racing at this point tliat it was apparent, bar accident, a new record would be put up, and the crowd of onlookers were all on the qui vivo. The circuit (six furlongs) occupied Imiu 35sec., and amidst intense excitement the daughter of Wildmoor and Bonnie Belle dashed past the judge’s box in 2min 7 1,-Ssec. When the official time-keep-ers made the announcement Mr Moreland and his champion were cheered to the echo; indeed, »uch a seen© of
enthusiasm has seldom been witnessed on the Addington track. Country Belle was bred by Mr Moreland at Kakaia, and 12 months ago acted as "uuner-op to Win Soon in the New Zealand. Trotting Cup. Last month she set the seal on her fame by appropriating that much-coveted race, and will now retire to the stud the undisputed trotting queen of the Dominion.
