Sr Joseph Ward, Minister for Finance, is confined to his room owing im a cold.
Among the sick and wounded soldiers returning to New Zealand by the Ruahine, which is expected to arrive at Auckland on January 4 are Lieutenant W. Furby and Troopers Terence Malone and W. H. Row-
The engagement is announced of Miss Sybil Rapley, second daughter of Mr and Mrs T. W. Rapley, of Wellington, to Lieutenant C. H. T. Skelley, of -the Tenth Reinforcements. The marriage is to take place within a fortnight.
Mr Val Duff, commercial director at the Technical College, resigned his position at yesterday's meeting of the Education Board, in order to join the staff of Mr Hugh Baily. The Board accepted the resignation with regret, and steps will be taken to fill the vacancy.
Mr John Caughey, headmaster of one of the largest primary schools in Christchurch, has been appointed As-sistant-Director of Education. His salary will be £650, and his first work will be the preparation of a Dominion scheme of the classification of teach-

A letter has been received in Eltham from Mr Charlie Ford, who went to the front with the first contingent, to the effect that he is at present in the Australian No. 2 Hospital at Lemnos with a badly injured foot. He bad been operated upon, and at tune of writing, did not expect to leave the hospital for some considerable time.
At yesterday's meeting of the Taranaki Education Board, the following appointments to school committees were made : —Oakura : Messrs H. Gordon and J. C. Gower in place of Messrs J. C. Sumner and €. George; Huiroa: H. B. Kidd in place of W. Philips; Burford: F. Higgins and Waldan in place of Messrs A. Wood and C. Jensen; and Central: Mr C. T. Mills in place of Rev, T. H. Roseveare. All resigned.
