PERSONAL.

Rotorua announces the death of Mr William Alfred Butt, an old resident and a Maori war veteran, at the age of 73. Mrs Jane Cubbons, wife of Mr Win. Cubboius, of Opunake, was found dead yesterday. It is thought that death was due to an epiletic lit. Mr W. H. Hawkins, of Okato, has been offered and accepted a captaincy commission in th e next reinforcements, and goes into camp on January 11. Mr Hawkins is an ex-captain of volunteers.

Major loomer, of the Salvation Army, whoso welcome meeting takes place to-night, arrived this afternoon. The scholars of the Army Junior Corps will receive prizes to be distributed by the Major.

Mr C. Washer, of Inaha, who met with an accident a little while ago, being thrown out of a gig, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery, although still conhned to his bed .

Captain A. L. Mac Diarmid, who lias volunteered for active service, goes into camp on January IU, and will be attached to the 14th Rein•forcements. Captain Mac Diarmid was in 1901-2 a member of the Stratford Rifle Volunteers.

Major G. Craig, of Auckland, who left with the Main Body of the Expeditionary Force, returned to New Zealand by the Moeraki from Sydney the other day. Major Craig was severely wounded at Cape Helles, and also took part in the lighting at Anzac and Suvla Bay. The Patea Press reports the death of Mr James Aitcheson, a well-known resident of Patea, aged 35. The deceased, as far as can be ascertained, left on Friday evening to walk to Kakaramea, but did not return, and on a search being instituted he was found on Mr Gilligan’s farm on Sunday, death having taken place some time before.

Mr W. M. Garner, who has been stationed as fitter in charge of the New Plymouth locomotive running sheds, has received promotion as leading fitter at the Auckland running sheds. At a meeting of the locomotive staff yesterday, Mr Garner vas made the recipient of a presentaion from his fellow-workers. Mr Earner proceeded to Auckland by the nail train this morning.

Mrs W. Sime and family, of Kapo’nga, will have the sincere sympathy of their many friends (states the Hawera, Star) on the occasion of the loss they have sustained in the death of Mr Sime, which took place at Kaponga on Tuesday morning. Mr Sime was well known in the Kaponga district, where several members of his family also reside. He himself had for some time been laid more or less aside, and suffered considerably as a result of an accident some years since. ""

The death of Mr Francis Wilson Smith, of Wingfield Street, Wellington, in his 79th year, removes another old identity. The late Mr Smith and Mr James Brown, of Upper Hut, were the two last of 130 men who sailed from Wellington on May 24, 1852, in the cattle ship Tory for the Victorian goldfields. They went through all the troubles and trials of the early days in Victoria. The late Mr Smith is the fourth of the company that uas died during the last twelve months, and Mr Brown is now the last survivor. ’
