PATRIOTIC CARDIFF.
(From our own Correspondent). The patriotic concert and dance oi Thursday night was a very great success. The weather was excellent and the building was well filled. We were glad to see a good many from Stratford. Apologies ' wore received for non-attendance from AH J. W. iioou (Mayor), and Air J. W. McMillan, but the latter managed to make the trip and did good work, as will appear in the list of those who nought a much-auctioned cake. Mr J. 13. Hine occupied the chair, and iu the course of a short speech tendered his congratulations to Corporal Darker, D.C.M., and said tliat Cardiff should be proud of having sent Corporal Barker to the front. The chief items on the first half of the programme were;—Duet, Mr Smith and Air Howard; comic song, Mr Howe (encored); quartette, “Fro I’hundo Basso,” Messrs Cribbings, Howarth, Frebblo, and Smith (encored) ; recitation, Air O’Connor; song, “A Sergeant of the Line,” Air (libbing; comic song, Air Howarth. The second half was occupied by Mr Foley, of Stratford, with sleight of hand and ventriloquism. His entertainment was greatly enjoyed, and uis audience was quick to show its appreciation. Mr Foley is an able exponent of the magio art, and his ventriloquism kept the audience in roars of laughter. His cornet and piano duet was also greatly appreciated. To AH Foley was due the success of the evening, and Cardiff’s thanks are accorded him.
During the interval a cake donated by Mr Elder, of Stratford, was auctioned by Mr R. Cottier, who very kindly came out for that purpose. The oiddiug was brisk; several Macs being present, who, together with three small men, Smith, Davey and David, kept things moving, and the result will be an addition of £7 to £8 to the fund. The cake was finally bought by Mr Mine and presented by him to Mrs Barker, the mother of our D.0.M., a graceful and thought* ful act, which was greeted with'great applause. Immediately after the concert an excellent supper was partaken of, Mr Elder catering to the satisfaction of everyone, Dancing was then indulged in till about 1,30, Mr G. Rogers making an efficient M.O. Excluding the proceeds of the sale of the cake, the sum of £ls 10s was taken. The ladies worked assiduously to make the whole a success, and the committee, Messrs A. J. Smith, G. Rogers, D. Cameron and 0. Howarth, have every reason to bo pleased with the result of their efforts. To Miss JL. Rrebble, who gav© a lot of her time to concert matters, and to Messrs Maurice and Victor Prohble, who supplied the dance music, our thanks are due. Mr A. J. Smith kindly donated a ham, and the schoolboys, Masters McFadgen, R. Smith, Stewart, P. Crossley and D. Crossley, Barker and W. Bullock worked patriotically and successfully —disposing of over £7 worth of tickcts.
