The 13ill for the abolition of the Legislative Council received u short shift when it reached the Council. The latter by twenty-six to three votes carried an amendment disagreeing with the principles, and the Council decided to forward the resolution to the King. MONOPOLY OF BREAD. (Received 8.30 a.in.) Sydney, December 10. The Bread Monopoly Bill passed its final reading. N.S.W. SAVINGS BANK. (Received 0.35 a.m.) Sydney, December 10. The annual report of the Government Savings Bank gives the total deposits as £33,530,208, the increase oemg £1,110,000. Alter deducting the depositors' interest and ‘cost ol management, a margin ot £-1 10s per cent remained/.
TREATMENT OF VENEREAL DISEASES,
(..Received 9.45 a.m.) Melbourne, December 10. , lu the Assembly Mr Elmslie complained ql‘ the inadequate provision made lor dealing witii several diseases in the Health Department estimates, lie said that a sense ol laise security hampered all attempts to cope with the disease. The Minister for Health said that the money which had been earmarked for the purpose shocked him bj its insignificance. The Chief Health Officer had reported that patients and nurses were shunned. The difficulty wa's to make the disease a reI portable one. A preparation known to both was not a specific as it was supposed to lie. It is proposed to deal with thf matter in an amending health bill shortly. MEAT ACQUISITION BY THE STATE. (Received 9.45 a.m.) Brisbane, December 10. A proclamation has been issued extending the operations of the Sugar Acquisition Act to authorise the acquisition of meat now and here- ' after coining within the State.
