AMUSEMENTS.

HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE. "OUR DAREDEVIL CHIEF." Th change of programme at His Majesty's Theatre last night proved most popular and entertaining. The "Piece de Resistance" was- Keystone's newest comedy production, "The Daredevil Chief." Throughout the film, Ford Sterling, the inimitable screen policeman was afc his best. "The Life Line," a feature drama by the Lubin Coy, portrays a story that in all likelihood is only too true of •ome in the social world-to-day. "The War Gazette," "Haunting Memories," "The Actor's Boardinghouse," and "Tangle of Pokes and Jabs," complete an excellent programme. To-morrow night, a special feature, entitled "Lil o' London," will be screened.

THE AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL. OOXINC DAY CONTESTS. The executive of the New Zealand Axemen's Carnival have drawn up a very comprehensive programme to bo decided at the carnival held annually at Eltham each Boxing Day. This year the carnival is confined to one day, and the^ lengthy programme will need plenty of energy to complete in time. Several new items appear on the programme. The Natives are well catered for, and good nominations care expected from Waitara, Opunake, and Okaiawa. Amongst the axemen competing appears the name of W. Pech, one of the best axe,meu who has ever competed at these sports. At the present moment he is the holder of the Axemen's Cup, and a win this month will make the trophy his for good. He is an ideal specimen of nian- • hood, standing well over 6ft. 4iu. in height and built in proportion. J. Shewry is another axeman who has made himself popular alike with spectator and opponent. Dave Pretty, a name to conjure up with past '"chops," is also expected to compete, and the presence *of these three experts in the championship events should make the 1915 contests as interesting as those gone. Naturally the association has lost many members by them going to the Front and engaging in sterner contests, and amongst theso are many who, the Fates being kind, will return and win many more honours in the chopping arena. C. Dwyer and Kennedy are well-known sawyers and will probably be seen contesting for supremacy in these events. Liberal prizes are be- ! ing offered iu the cycling events, and cyclists should nominate freely. A good grass track is always prepared, and visiting men can complete their training there without extra fee. Mr G, D. Gow is the new secretary, and has at the hack of him many of the old committee, who have established a reputation, for promptness in getting competitors up to the mark. The handicapping is in the capable hands of Mr J. A. Hansen, who has been associated with the carnival right from the initial meeting.
