THE ALLIES' MUNITIONS.
If Germany desired any further evidence than she has already had ;>!' the intention of the Allies to carry the war through to a successful conclusion! and to ignore any overtures for a 1 specious and unsatisfactory peace she' should find it in their action in thej organisation of munition ?»Pf||4-S says the Otago Daily Times. A conference of representatives of Great Britain, Franco. Russia, and Italy was , held iu London, at which a. complete] understanding was reached as to the respective needs and resources, of th<| lour Towers, while the necessary organisation was effected for systematic co-operation in lieu of isolated effort. Whatever this co-operation may actually involve, it will be productive,J no doubt, of desirable and beneficial l 'results . Some months ago anything] but pleasant reading was fuxci&ljedjn the reports concerning the lack on the part of the Allies in the West of a sufficiency of munitions, aild it' is. common knowledge tlifit the Russian rciieat in the East was attributable 1 to a like shortage. There 'is grmdground, however, for the belief that on both fronts this state of affairs is j now a thing <iuit.e of the past. Instead of the recriminations and reproaches of which so miK-h"was"'treard, when it first began to be realised tlint ) the Allies were not meeting the enemy on equal terms in the West for lack of munitions, we now find a high tn-i bute paid to the achievements of the British munition industry within the; last six months.. And as the evidence on this point is cumulative we may reasonably conclude that what the British munition factories are actual-] ly doing at the present time will rank as one of the most remarkable achieve-, ments in the war. . j
