The steamer Uonmera berthed an hour earlier than they had expected, and by the time the demonstrators had gathered in any force, the hulk of the passengers had gone ashore. While the shore people and the passengers were intermingled. l some immigrants were subjected to uncomplimentary remarks. Among the first-class passengers, it was assorted that twenty to thirty-live men were of military ago. and none of these were assisted immigrants. . All the men- spoken to by pressmen denied having left England for other reasons than the econo-’ mic conditions prevailing there.
