MAKAHU.

SEND-OFF TO THE CATTONS. t Makahu residents held a farewell social and dance on Friday night in honor of Privates Bert and Charlie Gatton, who were on leave from camp with the Tenth Reinforcements. The Schoolhouse was well filled, representatives of every family in the district being present. Considering the very short notice, practically only twentyfour hours having elapsed from the time the proposal to hold the social was made, the attendance speaks highly of the regard all hokl for the Gattons. Mr C. Martin presided, and in felicitous speech voiced this, sentiment. These young,.fellows, who, l»j) said, were knp»u to the people o,f Makahu all their lives j/ were going away bo help to fight the battles of thfe Empire, and it was felt that such splendid action by two of young men could not be allowed to pass unnoticed. These were not the first of their young men to go to the war; others who had been playmates of the Gattons (the speaker was referring'U the Foleys) had gone, and their names were now inscribed on the Roll of Honour. There had been no public function tendered to them, hut times had changed somewhat, and it was considered proper to recognise the sacrifices that their young men were making in enlisting. r l he attendance at the social showed the residents’ appreciation of what the Gattons had done. Mr Martin’s remarks were loudly applauded. There was a plentiful supply of refreshments and eatables, and dancing was kept «P until 2.30, when a very enjoyable time was concluded. Mrs Gatton, mother of the guests of the evening, was also present, having travelled from New Plymouth. The committee very kindly engaged a motor car to convey the Gattons from Stratford to Makahu.
