GENERAL.
An ususual spectacle, in the shape of a white rainbow, was observed in the southern heavens at Hastings on Friday morning (says th© correspondent of the Napier Telegraph). The conditions were misty, with a clear eastern sky, at 5.30 o’clock, wbes a perfect arc, of the purest white, formed, and beyond the fact that it was absolutely tintless and much broader, it had tlie appearance of the ordinary rainbow. It only laster about a minute. From the Hawera Star: During a conversation with the judge of Jersey stock at Egmont Show, Mr R. Eagle, junr., of Carterton, remarked that in his opinion the best type of a Jersey cow that he had seen was Veronica, whose photograph appears in last month’s New Zealand I armer, and in arriving at his decisions he had endeavoured as far as possible to adhere to this type of cow. As a whole h considered the Jersey classes were a distinct credit to the district, being of a very high standard. Mr Eagle remarked that he was surprised at the careless way the cattle were handled in tho ring, owners lolling about and talking to mi© another, and making no attempt to show their exhibit to the best airaat*B»-
