EDUCATION COUNCIL.
IMPORTANT RESOLUTIONS. j Pun Pjlujss Association. Wellington, November 24. Tlie Minister for Education stated to-day that the following resolutions were adopted at last week's meeting j of the Education Council: — | "That in the opinion of the Council, National Scholarships should be tenable only at secondary and endowed I schools, as defined by the Act, district high schools, and technical high j schools." "That those already in receipt of i free education in secondary schools, district high schools, and technical high schools,, bo not excluded from ' candidature for Junior National Scholarships. ." | "That with regard to free places in technical schools, held by those who I are employed during the clay in districts where compulsory clauses of the Act are not in force, free places in i their present form should be abolish- i ed; that fees be reduced to not more ; than 30s per annum for a full course, > and that bonuses equal to fees be paid j to those who make satisfactory ad- J vances at proficiency classes, and, ! further, that in districts where compulsory clauses are, adopted all fees j should he abolished, and that in the last-named districts employers should •be required to give time off equivalent ', to one-half day per week. \ The Council passed the following motion unanimously: "That free phi- j cos be not tenable at private schools." | The following resolution was adopt- j ed by 8 votes to 0: "That secondary ( school certificates should be obtainable j at all registered secondary schools, if conditions are complied with, and that the Minister of Education be advised to liave the Act amended according- •*•" ™ • ' Other resolutions were: "That in view of the present 1 difficulties occasioned by the war in obtaining a permanent medical inspector of .schools, temporary arrangements he made with local medical practitioners for medical insepction of schools in the country and outlying districts"; "that the Minister be advised that, in view of existing circumstances, the attention of medical inspectors should be specially directed for the present to cases of special defects.".
