On the Sea
BATTLE CRUISER DERFFLINCER REPORTED MINED. [United Pbkbs Association, t Rotterdam, November 25. There is a persistent report that the cruiser Derfflinger has been mined and sunk in the Baltic, and that 33 of those on board were drowned. The "Deriflinger" is Germany's newest battle-cruiser. She displaces 26,200 tons. High speed and great fuel endurance were the outstanding features of this ship. She was armed with eight 12in. guns in four double turrets, all on the centre line. She also carried twelve 5.9-in. quick-firers and twelve 21-pounders. The turbines developed a speed df 26J knots. She was undoubtedly a most valuable adi dition to the German navy.
SUBMARINES IN THE BALTIC. Copenhagen, November 25. Another British flotilla of submarines is at the entrance to the Sound, awaiting the first fog for an opportunity to slip into the Baltic. SUPPLIES FOR SUBMARINES. Rome, November 24. The military authorities at Naples have sequestrated a Greek boat at Epiros, loaded with 120 barrels of benzine. It is believed she was supplying German submarines. - STEAMER CREW CAPTIVES. SPAIN ARRANGING RANSOM. (Received 9.50 a.m.) Sir Edward Grey, in the House of Commons, announced that twelve survivors of the British steamer Woodford are held to ransom by North African tribes. Spain is negotiating for their release.
