• (From Our Own Correspondent). The patriotic social held »a *> ne Douglas Hall ou Friday evening was a groat success. A large and representative audience gathered from the surrounding districts, including visitors i'roni Stratford and Toko. Mr E. Young, "Convent Bells"; solo, Mrs Bocock, "The Little Red Cross"; recitation, Mr Wilson, "The Wounded Soldier," encore, "The Fallen Soldier"; solo, Mr Thomas, "Resignation," encore, "0 Dry Thoso Tears"; solo, Miss Porrott, "We'll Look After You" ; piano solo, Miss Bredow; solo, Mr Perrott, "True as . Captain"; vocal duet, Mr W. Stewart and Todd, "Ragtime Melodies"; solo, Miss B. Young, "As a Mother Loves Her Son"; duet, Mrs Thomas and Mr Cole, "Life's Stream and River"; solo, Mr Hale, "Spldiers of the King" ; solo, Mr Stewart, "Where are our New Zealand Boys to-night." The competitions for gentlemen's hat trimming was won by Mr Waklin, Mr Hine being second. The table centre fell to Mr Waklin. Set cane baskets—Mi« A. Needham 1, Mr Hine 2, Mr Wilson 3. Beaded cushion and clock—Miss Copeland. A pig, Mrs Smith; re-so!d to Mr Noedham for £l. Waltzing competition, Miss E. Bredow and Mr W. Stewart. The children eagerly surged around the bran tub, which was highly delightful to them. A fine large cake, in which a coin of the realm was unsuccessfully guessed for, was purchased by Mr T. Rust. A sumptuous repast of refreshments was handed round, and then a few dances, and the singing of the National Anthem, concluded a. most successful and delightful evening. The total takings which were about £l6 will augment the Wounded Soldiers' Fund.
