Aii Adelaide cable announces the death of Mr Robert Barr Smith, millionaire merchant and philanthropist, aged 91 years. Mr W. G. K. Kenrick, S.M., has found it necessary, for reasons of health, to take a rest, and he has been >granted extended leave, which, will tcpmmence on December 6. Mr Haselden, S.M., will temporarily take up the magisterial work in the Hawera district during 31 r Kenrich’s absence. Mr D. Mason, who has been Clerk of the Court in Hawera for the past six years,' has been promoted to bi; Deputy-Registrar of the Supreme Court at Dunedin and left on Saturday to take up his new appointment. Mr. Morgan, successor to Mr Mason, arrived in Hawera on Friday. Writing ' from Government' ‘House, ! He deeply sympathises with those relatives who have lost dear ones, “that have paid the penal tv—alas, too common—for devotion' to the Empire’s cause.” He further adds that “he would like to be among those who had gone, but other public Iduties claim me at this outpost of the Empire.”
Olptpary; The death occurred this morning of Mrs Sarah Cockhead, relict of the’ latfe Stephen Cockhead, at the advanced age 'of 73, i following. . an attack* ’df ‘brdilthfitisl ! The deceased, with her "husband, whof 'predeceased her by over six years, came to New Zeldand in the ship Lady Josland in 1876, landing at Lyttelton, after,, which they followed farming pursuits at Springston. They removed to Taranaki 19 years ago, and farmed land on the Brecon and Brooke’s Hoads for years, where they made many friends. Deceased leaves to molirn her loss three sons (Mr George Cockhead, Palmerston North. < Mr John Cockhead, Feilding, Mr Ernest > Cockhead, Cambridge), and one daughter (Mrs Max Gernhoefer) Toko. Mrs Gernhoefer is specially unfortunate, as lier son was only last night removed to a Stratford private hospital seriously ill from pleurisy following on pneumonia. The sympathy ot the district will he extended to the family in their trouble. The funeral leaves the residence of Mr Gernhoefer for the Kopnatama Cemetery at 1 o’clock ou Wednesday.
