The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1915. EMICRATIONAND IMMIGRATION.

According to returns now available in g Britain emigration and immigration 5 have fallen off so much that the subject is only interesting by comparison. In the month of August last, 1591 persons (as against 7270 in ' August 1914) left United Kingdom ports to take up permanent residence in British North America, and though thi s drop is considerable, it is quite surpassed by the comparative figures for Ausf tralasia. Last August, only one him-, p dred and four persons left Britain or Ireland to take up their abode in the Commonwealth whereas a year before, although war had broken out and emigration was adversely affected, 2205 went to Australia. New Zealand fared better, the. Dominion having attracted 291 persons, of whom 154 were females, as against 0.42 in 1914. lo British South Africa 409 emigrants •1 travelled as against 802; to India and ' Ceylon 255 against, 540, and to other British Colonies and possessions 255 against 568 making a total emigration to various parts of the Empire of 2946 a s against 11,749. It is also shown by recently published figures in the Mercantile Gazette that as regards foreign countries, the United States attracted over a third less emigrants, the figures being 2219 as compared with 7124, and oilier foreign countries absorbed 228 against 102. The result is a total emigration from America to foreign countries of 2447, as against 7526, ami a grand total for the month of 5595 emigrants, or 15,882 less than in August, 1914. Taking the eight months of the current year, the number of emigrants has dropped 110,141 to 50,598. While emigration lias contracted the return flow has expanded. Last month 8202 persons, as compared with 6695 in August, 191 I, returned to the Uni*-- 4 Kingdom from places within the Empire to take up their residence there.
