A well-known and respected Douglas settler has a young grand-son with the true British spirit. As the Irish lad told King George, he is “quite a boy” now. but ho wanted to fight for his country, so he ran" away , from home. His parents lost him altogether until a few days ago, when his mother received the following letter: “Dover Barracks, 25th September, 19,15. Dear Father and Mother,—l hope yon are all well. I am sorry I left yon, but you don’t know how I wanted. to go to the front. I walked to Waitara that night, caught the 7 o’clock train to Wellington, and went to the wharves; went aboard a liner, looked all round for a place to hide and got under a canvas cover. The captain sent me down shovelling coal. .1 joined the Fusiliers, and am', getting on alright; will soon lie going to the front, in about Four months. I have learnt a lot since I have been away. I only wish I bad somebody with me I know. I enlisted at Tilbury Docks, passed alright. T said T was 19. T hope you will write to'me.”
