Statements have .recently been in circulation to the effect that trouble iis brewing between the shipping- companies and , the seamen and that ithe waterside workers throughout the country might possibly become .involved.; Witly,the object of trying to' ascertain .whether then* foundation in j'uct for, J;he,rumorsi a . j-epre-senfative of, th,e .jChpTstchurch Sun 4 n|ade inqnii'ies,. both from the employers and,from members.of the Lyttelton Wharf Labourers’ Union, and as a result of these the journal in, question affirms that the statements made are of an exaggerated character and that relations of a decidedly cordial nature exist between the employers and the Union. The Sun also states that there is no information available of any general dissatisfaction or movement towards the precipitation of trouble. There are, of course, various small matters in dispute, but this is inevitable at the best of times, and it is asserted that while in each port there may be now, as there always lias been, a dissatisfied section ready for trouble, there is* no general or widespread movement in that direction, and no trouble is anticipated. With regard to tlie seamen, it is admitted by.-em-ployers- spoken to that there has of late been incidents indicating a spil it of restlessness on the part of the men, but on the other hand it is contended by wharf workers who know the firemen well that this is nothing unusual with them. On the whole, the Sun’s informants assorted most definitely that the statements made were of an exaggerated and alarming character, and without foundation, so far as the waterside workers are concerned.
