THE ARIEL STREET BRIDGE QUESTION.

[To The Editor Stratford Posr.l Si,-,—Your report r e -Monday's Council mating is not quite clear. Some weeks previous to meeting, I had lodged notice to move that' tenders be called for a footbridge over Patea at Ariel Street, and therefore spoke accordingly.' When the v.ere framed for the year, the sum of £75 was agreed on by the Council for thn» work, the estimates being £llO for Cordelia Street and £65 for Ariel Street £lO being added for reading. I said 1 did not mind where the bridge went, ,so long as, after careful consideration, it was put in the most convenient place lor the majority who would use it. The amount of £75 was put on the estimates, and it was the first time it had been put on the estimates, previous Councils throwing it out Of course, finance must be stud- • ied. In reply tp Cr Lawson as to who gave the Works Committee authority „to get material for Broadway footpaths, I stated the Council had passed a resolution authorising the work to be proceeded with, but that it was necessary to lay tar hot and the shingle dry, and it \vas very difficult to do this in wet, cold weather—hence the delay. In answer to Cr Hunter as to whether the new concrete kerb wa s the gazetted level of the street, I stated the levels were not gazetted in Stratford, bu'tjtbe original pegs put down by Mr Climie are Atill showing/ and are almost the sanfe as "the new concrete kerbing, and'that some'positions the footpath had a two, four or even of five-inch fall, whereas the proper level i.> (U inches. Hoping that this will make the position clear, and that the .bridge will not be hung up when tenders 'come in, because of finance. Yours faithfully. J./W. BOON, Mayor.
