The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED. THE EGMONT SETTLE. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1915. VACILLATING GREECE.
More than ever puzzling is the news from Greece, and it is hard to under-: stand how, as an outcome of the recent: political .crisis juid 1 feeling in favor, of M. Venezelos that the country has exhibited, it is;possible to follow King Constantino's lead. Yet, so far, it seems that the [enemy influence and enemy wiles have triumphed over the Kntente's diplomatic efforts to secure Greek co-operation against the Turco-Huns. The altitude of King Constantino and the pressure he has brought to bear on the Government have placed Greece in an entirely false position, for while affirming a beneficent neutrality and refusing to assist Serbia at this critical time she is following the course best calculated to help the Germans. At the same time by continuing to permit the landing of Anglo-French troops at Salonika it is certain that offence will be given the Central Powers. The country is undoubtedly against any action in concert with Turkey or Germany, ami M. Yenizelos has put the case plainly. "The duty of Greece," he recently said, "is to enter the war as a moral obligation to Serbia, to prevent Bulgarian predominance, and to protect the ideals of small nations against the ideals of a single great State." I'lidoubfedly that was the stand lo take, but German influence so far has thwarted the people's wishes through. King Constantiue. In the present temper of the people his attitude is dangerous to himself, and if the lAllies are but linn enough in their demands there may be a change of tone in favor oi the only course Greece oughf to take for her future safety ami in justice to her neighbour. Serbia.
