Cr. Law,son: Are the Works Committee the Councils' What power has it to instruct the Overseer to proceed with the work' of repairing the footpaths in Broadway without consulting the Council Cr. Lawson said he never know anything about the matter until he saw it in his copy of the reports. The Mayor said the old Council passed a resolution authorising the work ot retailing and repairing of the footpaths. They were not ante to carry on the work in the winter, so it had just beeu commenced. Cr. Lawson: 1 did not know anything about it. A committee lias not the right to authorise any work without being passed by the Council. He asked to have the resolution passed by the lato Council read, and this was done. Cr. Hunter asked what was the gazetted level of the street, and Mere not tho Council altering fJio level in repairing the footpaths. He asked had the legal position been considered ? The Mayor replied that the present footpaths wore -1 ur 5 inches loner. There was no fall in some places, and in others there was a fall of about Oi inches in 13ft. Cr. Hunter: In cutting down the level are tho Council doing so before considering the legal side? The Mayor: "No legal level is gazetted. The Council made its own level." His Worship stated that the Council controlled the outside level ol tho footpaths and the ratepayer the inside. The Mayor stated that Cr. Lawson did not understand the position. The Works Committee should have power to authorise such work to bo done. The report was adopted. GENERAL. Cr Hancock said there vva s a Igreat deal too much broom around the town, and it was decided to draw the attention of the Noxious Weed Inspector to the matter. On Cr Lawson's motion, it was decided that the matter of removing one of I the lights in front of the Fire Station 'to a more suitable position should be referred to the Lighting Committee to report to next meeting. Cr Thompson gave notice to move at the next meeting: "That the motion with reference to connecting Mr Mulree's property with the sewerage through the Municipal Reserve be rescinded." Cr Thompson said the Works Committee visited Eltham the other day and saw the tailing plant at work". He gave a general outline of the working of tho tar-sealing and spraying plant. Mr T. Milner waited on the Council requesting that a better entrance bo constructed to his property in Hamlet Street south. Mr Milner stated that there was no footpath leading to his property, and people had, occasionally, to wade up to their knees when visiting his house.—Cr Thompson moved that the matter be left to the Works Committee with power to act.—Seconded by Cr Young.—Mr Milner said that he had made two applications and nothing had been done. - The Mayor said Mr Milner had no entrance or footpath.—Cr Hancock: But he ha s a good-size drain to fall in.__Cr Thompson's motion was adopted. Cr Hunter moved: That Cm Young and Hancock be appointed a. committee to inquire into the loss sustained by the poundkeeper on County cattle. —Carried. Accounts amounting to £lO5 15s 5d wore passed for payment.
