GERMANS GET A BAD TIME. TJwitou Press Association. (Received 10.40 a.m.) Petrograd, November 5. A communique states; We repulsed an enemy offensive in the Schlock region. The enemy unsuccessfully attempted to cross the Dvina below Dvinsk. We progressed to the outskirts of Tllukst. Several German attacks southward of Lake Sventen collapsed, and they suffered enormous loss. Forest fighting westward of Chartorysk resulted in the Germans leaving the ground strewn with corpses. RUSSIANS ADVANCE, The High Commissioner reports: — London, November 5 (5.10 a.m.) Petrograd reports: In the Dvinsk region we moved forward south-east of Hint and south of Lake Sventen. We captured 540 prisoners. The advance continued to the village of Podgatze. West of Chartoryisk the enemy advanced in open order through a wood but were repulsed, losing 400 prisoners. Enemy fresh attacks in Tomaroira were repulsed with still greater losses. A GENERAL IN DISGRACE. FIFTEEN YEARS FOR NEGLIGENCE AT KOVNO. (Received 12.15 p.m.) Petrograd, November 5. General Gregorieff, former commandant at Kovno, has been court-martial-led and sentenced to fifteen years’ hard labor and the loss of all his rights for not taking adequate measures to defend the fortress and for being absent during the fighting.
