THE. MARQUETTE TRAGEDY. Feu Press Aesociat.on. Wanganui, November 4. The Marquette disaster exacted a heavy toll from Wanganui,' three of the drowned being well-known local chemists, namely, C. F. Perrin, James Bird, and Victor Rhodes. They were all about thirty years of age, unmarried, and prominent in athletic circles. Perrin’s parents reside at Masterton, Bird’s at Waimate, and Rhodes’ at Auckland. THE CALL TO ARMS. STRATFORD’S RESPONSE., Yesterday was a busy day at the local Defence Office, when eight men handed in their names for active service. During the past week only one ni.au has failed to pass the medical test. The following men have been passed as medically Jit:— Reginald William Hamhlyn, farmer, Midhirst—lnfantry. Arthur James Alack, shepherd, Club ‘Hotel, Stratford—lnfantry. Harry Frost Keightley, farmer, .Midhirst—Mounted. Frederick George Blake, mining engineer. Aiiranda Street, Stratford Eield Engineers. Vernon John Shottor. farm hand, AI idhirst—.Mounted. Charles Edmond Neal, cheese maker, Cardiff—-Infantry. Cornelius O’Connor, . Douglas— Infantry. Robert Johnson, . Toko— Infant ry.
