LOCAL AND GENERAL.
— Mr G. T. Murray, Resident Engineer, Public Works Department, Stratford, is at present in Wellington, The Ladies' Patriotic Committee's Fund will benefit to tlie extent of just over £l3 from last Saturday's Market conducted by Mesdames Middtoton, C. Penn, and Abraham. Raffles I' o '' & picture, donated by Mrs Manoy, and a cushion given by .Mrs C. Perm, were conducted during the day, and "ere won by Mrs Townsend and Mrs Fred Foley respectively. Tlie Ladies'' Patriotic Committee wishes to acknowledge donations as follows:—Two leather pillows from Mrs I'aintor, Fast Road; old linen, from Stratford School Children; two pairs bed so# from the children of Miss .Pearce's class at the primary school; and two feather pillows from Mrs T. White,
Saturday was a record recruiting day at the local Defence office, twelvt men enlisting, out of which numhei seven have been passed as medically fit, two rejected, and three have yet to he examined. The mouth wa s also a record, seventy-three men having handed in their cards and about fifty of these were passed as medically lit. The following men have been passed for active service:—Messrs S. It. Rothwell (Cardiff), R. H. Geddings (Cardiff), .7. M. Wylie (Ngaere), L. (J. Bennett (Stratford), T. W. Henderson (Midhirst), W. G. Pointon (Tarilci). H. .J. Cooper (Stratford), H. J. Kayo (Kohuratahi), C. 15. Jones (Midhirst), G. Ross (Stratford), W. Stewart (Kiore), H. J. Hamblyn (Cardiff), and .1. K. Hamblyn (Tariki).
