v FIRE AT A SCHOOL. 600 CHILDREN IN A PANIC. HYSTERIC! PARENTS FIGHT THE POLICE. [United Press Association.] (Received 2.5 p.m.) Xew York, October 28. At Peabody,-a lire broke out in St. John’s Parochial School, through a boiler-room .accident,ft ) ,^\v ii minutes after school had assembled. A panic affected 6fjo children, who dashed to the exits from the hall. The stairway leading from the upper floors was choked by shrieking children. Xeighbours held bla'nkets outside the window#, many children being in-jured-as the result of jumping therefrom . Fifty are missing, and are believed to bo dead. j , The fire consumed the brick structure in so short a time that the brigade was unable to effect rescues. The teachers marshalled the children for fire drill. The alarm was given, however, and one hysterical child screamed. This affected the others, and all rushed panic-stricken downstairs. ’Hysterical men; women surrounded the school, attacking the police in vain efforts to reach their children, whose _ shrieks \yere heard amid the flames. ~ f! ;,;, , * (Received 1.35 p.ip.), Xew Yerjc, October 28.
