On the Sea
H.M.S ARGYLL ASHORE. CRUISER MAY BECOME TOTAL WRECK. ALL HANDS SAFE. The High Commisisoner reports;— London, October 28 (1.5 p.m. The Admiralty announce that H.M.S. Argyll grounded this morning on the East Coast of Scotland, owing to had weather. It is feared that she may become a total wreck. The officers and crew were saved. ■ (The Argyll is an armoured cruiser ol 10,850 tons, with engines of 20,500 h.p., giving a speed of 22.3 knots. The armament is weak, and consists of only four 7.5iu. and six 6-in. guns, with twenty small quick-firers and two torpedo tubes. The crew numbers 655 officers and men. She cost £900,000, and was completed in 1906.) IN THE BALTIC. United Press Association. New York, October 27. The Berlin Admiralty is confronted with a practically impossible task of keeping submarines out of the Baltic. Petrograd reports that British submarines have sunk four German .steamers in the Baltic.
THE END OF THE PRINZ ADALBERT. New York, October 27. A Berlin telegram to the New York World states that the sinking of the Prinz Adalbert occurred in daytime. She was steaming in heavy weather, and two torpedoes struck her almost simultaneously. The cruiser was rent in twain, and the internal explosions of the magazines and boilers which followed immediately caused her to disappear in a few minutes like a piece of iron. The number drowned is unknown. The Prinz Adalbert had few devicas against torpedoes. Survivors state that they saw the trails of two torpedoes side by side, and assumed that the submarine was equipped with the new double torpedo tube system ot the latest English models.
