To sell people milk containing onethird, water in these days of increased cost of is simply contemptible.”—P.A, /.mo: ' ■. : On Monclay night, at the Salvation Army Hall, Adjutant Cook will make known the results of the annual SelfDenial Appeal .jUst concluded. Notwithstanding the very many appeals made throughout the past year, Salvationists have very sanguine hopes that this year a greater amount will be raised than even before, and they accept it as a distinct stamp or seal public’s approbation of the work they have in hand both in our camps in New Zealand and Egypt, and also of the many social efforts in progress in the Dominion. Members of every creed will await with interest the announcement of Sell-Den ial results.
On Sunday next, Special intercessory services will ho bold throughout the whole of the Alethodist Churches in the British Dominions in connection with the present struggle. The services in the Stratford Church will be conducted 1 by the Rev. J. Featherston. of Inglewood, in the morning, and the Rev. A. B. Chappell, ALA., of New Plymouth, in the evening. It is anticipated that there, will he a large representation of the members and adherents of the church at these services, in view of the serious character of the present crisis. Ihe annual appeal will be made on behalf of the Foreign Mission Fund for work in the South Sea Islands.
A colonial inquiry at Dannevirke into tiio death of Glenville Barclay. 1 who was found dead on Miller’s Road on Wednesday evening, found a verdict that death was due to’fracture of the skull caused hy being struck by a motor car driven by some person unknown whilst deceased was under the influence of liquor. The Press Association states that the evidence showed that deceased on the evening on which he was killed was found lying on the road in an inebriated condition. He explained to his discoverer that he had been drinking to drown his sorrow at having sent one son to the Dardanelles and another into Cam]) with the -Maori reinforcements. Hewas found later on dead.
A very successful sale of work in aid of the St. Andrew’s Church funds was conducted by the Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild at the Forester’s Hall yesterday afternoon and evening. The sale was opened at 2.d0, and from that time until the closing hour the stallholders are kept busy, the hall being packed in the evening. The promoters must have felt more than gratified at the success of the gala. The following ladies’ were in charge of the respective stalls;—Work,. Mesdames Petrie,. Letts, Prentice, and Stanton ; fancy, Mesdames Stewart, assisted by the Girls’ Guild; flower. .Mesdames Cork ill and M orison ; produce. Mesdames Tucker and Paul ; sweets, Bible Class Girls; cake, Mesdames Pattisou, Smart and Stevens; refreshment. Mesdames Lawrence. Brocklehank, McCluggage, Mackie, Reid. Lopdell, and Miss Prentice; dip. Mrs Arthur. During the evening a splendid new gramophone kindly lent by Mr («. Smart added to the enjoyment of the entertainment. .Mr Betts, junr., and Miss M'ackay rendered solos, which were much appreciated. The sale was the best held for years, the results exceeding all expectations. The Ladies’ Guild of the congregation greatly appreciate the patronage ol the public, which helped greatly to make the sale a success.
