GENERAL WAR NEWS
[United Press Association.j Borne, October 26. The King of Spain, the Pope, and President Wilson implored the Kaiser to save" thirty-four Belgians at Liege, who are under, the death sentence. I Madrid, October 27. The newspapers publish telegrams from Borne stating that General von Billow’s brother-in-law has informed friends that General Bulow has been instructed to shortly submit to King Alfonso and President Wilson the lines whereon Germany is prepared to discuss peace. London, October 27.
King George and M. Poincare reviewed the British troops, and the King and the Prince of Wales visited two of the French armies. His Majesty. with M. Poincare’s approval, gave General Joffrc a message of congratulation for the French trops, and M. Poincare conferred the War Cross upon the Prince of Wales. Horrible stories are stated of the massacre of Armenians. An elderly bishop, who wa s exiled, at the instance of a Turkish commander, had horseshoes nailed to his feet, the Turk saying that it was impossible for him t 0 go the distance barefooted. One hundred people were driven out, lour abreast, with their hands tied, and barbarously massacred. Women were outraged and exposed in the open plains to hunger and cold, while their children were bayonetted in their presence. Girls were auctioned in the market like sheep. At Angora and Nalikan over a thousand people were tom to pieces by the bayonet and nailed to the ground and disembowelled. There is every reason to believe that the massacres were at German instigation. At the London air raid inqu wt, the solicitor representing the Admiralty said that Sir Percy Scott had authorised the statement that the num-
, her of anti-aircraft guns had recently been increased, and further improvements in their position, number and character were contemplated. In the House of Commons .Mr Halfour stated that the Admiralty is responsible for the air defence >ll London, but the army was in cluuge ■>!. certain places, such as fortilied parts. The Hospital Nurses’ Home new building, which was named after Queen Alexandra, has been renameJ, at the latter’s request, the “Edith Cavell Home.” Mr Samuel has promised twenty thousand postal officials who are eligible for service to keep their positions open if they enlist, and will subsidise their army pay to the amount of their salary.
The National treasurers at Westminster Abbey, and St. Margaret s. Westminster, are being removed to greater safety. I The reorganisation of the hospitals, 'and arrangements at Horse Ferry •road to deal with convalescents, had felt the problem of the Australian officers and men on furlough in London unsolved. Arrangements have j now been completed to deal with the matter on the most generous hues. Mrs Moncrieff, Sir lan Hamilton'-, sister-in-law, has secured a large building in Rochester Row, close to Horse Ferry road, which was formerly a police instruction college, and it has been fitted with three hundred beds. There is ample space for buffets, reading and writing rooms, a gymnasium and other club facilities. It is open to Australians, New Zealanders, and men from the other dominions of the rank 'and iile. r l he King and Queen have approved the scheme and expressed a desire to be associated with it. Miss McCaul, the wellknown Red Gross organiser, lias offered premises in Wei bock Street for a similar club for Australian officers. The two schemes will cost £IO,OOO. and the men and officers will he charged small inclusiv erates to cover living expenses. The authorities announce the arrest of a German, - who is alleged to have forged American passports, and a man of Turkish abstration. Sentence was passed on the former, and the latter »will be court-martialled. Roth were charged with attempting to collect and communicate information to the enemy.
