LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Messrs 1L Fryday and H, IT. Burmestcr of Newton King’s Stratford staff, have been passed as fit for active service. A cable to his parents from Lieutenant C. A. Marchant. received last evening, reads: “Arrived safely. Well.” The office of origin was deleted liy Lip* censor. A settler of Scone, Now South Males, has a Shropshire x merino.ewe which has a remarkable record as a product;)' of twins. It i, s now Id years old and has had 25 lambs, 21 of wludi were reared. Its record is triplets once, twins ten times, and single lambs twice only. The transport (name censored) which brought the Inst lot of Australian troops hack succeeded in sinking an enemy .submarine while on her way to Lemnos during August last (states the Sydney Daily Telegraph). Prior to leaving Alexandria, she was armed with a 4.7 gun, and on the outward voyage a submarine was seen on the vessel’s quarter some distance off. Three shots wore fired, and apparently took effect, as the submarine disappeared immediately. Other transports which were following reported haying passed a big patch of oil, and as they were not molested by the submarine it was agreed Unit she must have been sent to the bottom. 'The officer who was on duty on hoard the transport at the lime the incident referred to occurred is still on her, and is responsible for the statement.
