RECRUITING MEETING.

MR HORNSBY, M.P., at KOHURATAHI AND HURiMOANA. (From our own Correspondent). On Wednesday, Mr J. T. M. Hornsby paid a recruiting visit to the above places. Mr J). Howard introduced the speaker at Kohuratahi, and Mr McCutchan at Hurimoana. A stirring appeal was listened to in both places, and Mr Hornsby's eloquent pleadings visibly affected hi.s audiences. In modest sentences, he told of the horrors and inhuman atrocities. He said a glance at the past (regarding our wounded and dependents) was not altogether pleasant, but, we here in New Zealaiid would see it did not occur again, He appealed to the single men■ {particularly to offer their services, saying in that way they would avoid], conscription, which would come unlessjthey did. He stated that he knew of*!a man with sons of military age hi; the South Island, who had a million pounds worth of property, and he had not donated to any fund, and had not sent one of: his sons to the front. Mr Homsby said this was the class conscription would touch, hut on the other hand, one volunteer Avas better than ten pressed men. Taking the other aspect, he knew of a postmaster who had sent his only two sons to Gallipoli, and they both had lost their lives. In an interview,.he said he was beside himself in his great loss, but had he two 'more to ,send,, then they also should go. Three , rousing cheers were giveu the, speaker, and on the 'motion of Mr Homsby, three cheers were given for "Our Boys" who are doing their duty. There are indications of Mr Hornsby's visit bearing fruit in our district. ►•
