NEWTON KING'S REPORT. '■ On Monday, 11th inst., for my Waiwakaiho bull fair, I had an entry of 115 •bulls and a good attendance of the public- Bidding throughout was good for all breeds with the exception of pedigree yearling Jerseys, which, with odd exceptions, did not meet with much inquiry. All others carrying condition sold at the hammer at prices exceeding vendor's expectations. 1 supply prices:—Pedigree Jersey 2 to 4 year bulls 14 to 25*gns., pedigree Jersey yearling bulls 7 to 23gns., grade Jersey bulls sgn s to £9 10s, grade Jersey yearling bulls £3 10s to £5, Ayrshire' bulls £7 to £8 Bs, yearling Holstein bulls from £3 15s to £l3 5s for an exceptionally well grown 15 month bull, 2 and 3 year grade Holstein bulls £8 10s to £l4 10s, well bred yearling Shornhorn bulls up to £lO 10s, 2 year Shornhorn bulls £l4 to £l7 10s. At Stratford, on Tuesday, 12th inst., I had a good entry, for which there was plenty of inquiry throughout, practically everything being cleared in' cattle pens and a complete clearance at the hammer in the sheep pens. Prices obtained were as follows:—Good 15 month heifers £2 10s to £3 5s 6d, smaller or younger £1 lis 6d to £2 6s, 15 month steers £3 14s and £3 15s 6d, yearlings £2 19s to £3 6s, empty 2 year heifers £3 Us 6d to £3 15s, rough 2 year steers £4 19s, young bulls £3 14s to £B, fat and forward cows £7 16s to £lO 15s, good store cows £5 18s to £7 3s, fair store cows £4 18s to £5 7s, smaller stores £3 16s to £4 9s, good 6 tooth ewes and lambs 34s 9d, fat and forward ewes 25s 10d,to 27 s Id, hoggets 20s 3d, 4 tooth wethers (good woolled) store to forward 32s 6d.
In the dairy yards there was a heavy entry, which met with good competition for anything with quality showing right close to calving. Buyers will not touch anything but forward heifers at these sales. Dairy cows sold at from £9 to £lO 2s 6d, and heifers from £6 15s to £lO, smaller sorts £4 10s to £5 15s, 57 head sold averaging £7 7s 9d. On Wednesday, 13th inst., for my Stony Eiver spring cattle fair I had a full yarding, all pens being well filled. Buyers were present in good numbers and made competition for all lines offered very satisfactory sale resulting, prices being obtained as follows:—15 month steers £4 2s to £3 10s, smaller £2 18s 6d to £3 6s, 15 month heifers £2 Is to £2 16s 6d, 2 to 2* year steers (most roughish cattle)- £4 16s to £5 lis, 2 year empty heifers £3 16s to £4 8s 6d, Holstein 15 month bulls £3 16s to £7 10s, small store cows £3 Is to £4 14s, good store cows £5 to £6 14s, forward cows up to £8 14s, fat cows (light) up to £9 12s 6d, prime cows £lO 16s to £l3, 2* to 3 year fat bullocks (very prime) £l4 ss, ewes and lambs 28s' 6d, store pigs 355, weaner pigs 15s 6d to 17s. On Thursday, 14th inst., I held my first spring sale in the Awakino yards. As anticipated, there was not a very heavy yarding, but everything, with the exception of three head was .cleared at prices in advance of outside markets. Judging by opinions voiced by the settlers, a spring sale will be very popular each year. Prices were: Mixed 15 month cattle (mostly heifers) £2 17s, 2 to 2-i year steers (rough) £5 12s to £5 19s, nice line of Shornhorn 2\ year steers £7 15s, forward 3 year bullocks £lO 10s, others £9 6s, stag £8 ss, store cows £5 2s to £6 10s, springing heifers £6. At Okau the next day the cattle pens were filled with good cattle, and a very spirited sale resulted, everything being cleared at the following satisfactory prices:—ls month heifers £2 10s to £3 ss, 15 month steers £3 13s to £4 6s, yearling steers £3 9s, 2 year steers £4 16s to £5 ss, good 2 to 2i year steers £6 4s to £7, 3 to 35year bullocks £8 15s to £9 19s, empty 2 year heifers £3 14s to £4 7s 6d, small store cows £3 15s, fair £4 14s to £lO Bs, dairy epw s £7 15s, springing heifers £5 17s 6d to £7 ss, HoJ, stein 15 month bulls (good) £4 10s to
£6 10s,V Holstein 3 year bulls £lO to £l6 2s 6d, good £4 10s to £6 10s, Holstein 3 year bulls £lO to £l6 2s 6d, Shorthorn bulls (rough) £8 to £9 15s, heavy Jersey bulls £ll 12s 6d. j On the same day at Stratford, for my annual bull fair, I had a very good yarding, with a representative attendance of buyers. Competition, taken throughout, was good, very satisfactory prices being realised, especially so for Shorthorn and Holstein bulls. Mr E. Eagle, junr's., yearling pedigree Jersey bulls made from 15 to 30gns., and the 2 year old 26gns. Other prices obtained were:—Yearling pedigree Jerseys 5 to 20gns., 2 to 5 year pedigree Jerseys 11 to 40gns, grade Shorthorn bulls (good) £l2 10s to £l9, poor sorts £5 10s to £7 15s, good Holsteins up to £l4 10s, others £5 15s to £9, yearling grade Jerseys £3 10s to £4 15s, grade Jersey 2 and 3 year bulls £8 10s to £l3.
i On Monday, 18th inst., at my Urenui yards, there was a full yarding of cattle, which met with a good back country inquiry, a full clearance being made at the hammer at advanced prices as follows:—15 month heifers (good lines) £2 19s to £3 2s 6d, yearlings £2 2s, 15 month to 2 year old steers £4 12s 6d, good 15 month steers (well grown, good colored lines) £3 18s 6d to £4 4s, rough £2 13s to £2 17s, Jersey 2 year steers £3 18s 6d, store cows (very small) £3 7s to £3 18s, store cows (fair) £5 3s to £6 12s, forward cows £7 lis, fat cows £8 10s to £lO 9s, fat bullocks £ls 10s and £l6 10s, empty 2 year heifers, well grown and good quality, £4 Is 6d to £4 9s 6d. Bulls (dairy) up to £l2 7s 6d for Shorthorn, and £9 for Jerseys, and £6 15s for 15 month Holsteins. IA 5 year pedigree Holstein bull made 17gns., pedigree Jersey bulls 7 to 20 gns. Fat ewes 31s, ewes and lambs 30s. The springing heifers yarded were all 2 year old cattle, but were nice quality and sold readily. Best Kbrts brought up to £9 2s 6d, others £5 5s to £6 17s 6d, good cows up to £9 ss.
At Rahotu on Tuesday, considering tho very rough morning, I had a fair entry, all of which were cleared as follows:—Fat heifers £8 13s 6d to £9 '4s, forward cows £7 2 S 6d to £8 13s, .fair stores £5 10s to £6 15s, small £3 19s to £4 12s, 15 month heifers £2 16s to £3 5 S 6d for tops, and £1 18s for yearlings, rough steers £2 9s and £2 10s, 15 month steers £3 18s, heavy bulls for boning £lO to £l4, lighter £5 10s to £7, dairy bulls £lO 10s to £l2, yearling Jersey bull (nice quality) £5 10s, 3 year filly by Garry Owen £2O.
I At Stratford on the same day for my i weekly springing heifer sale I had my usual entry, which were sold in good I time at satisfactory prices as follows: .Close-up quality heifers £8 5s to £l2j ss, others £4 15s to £6 ss, dairy cows, ! £5 12 s 6d to £l2 ss. The 51 head sold averaged £7 7s.
