CANADA'S GIFT.
Pacific Coast shipping circles liftve learnt with satisfaction that Canada's mid-winter donation to the cause of the Allies in the European war'will be five submarines of the latest design, an American correspondent states. These will be shipped late in February from North Vancouver, 8.C.. where they are under construction, the work having been begun less than one month ago. Those participating in the contract are declared to be the Electric Boat Company, of New York, the Seattle Construction an'd Pry-dock Company of Seattle, and the F/niou Iron Works, of San Francisco. During j the last month feverish activity Was been reported at the San Francisco Union i Iron Works, where employees : i have .'freely admitted. , they 'have been ;working day i, and. , night building .submarines, and it is a foregone conclusion that Uncle Sam is not in anyl inrgent; need of submersibles,' 6nlV recently twelve of, the latest,type of Jinhmarinos were .dispatched from thej Quiiic Shipbuilding,,Works., near Boston, Massachusetts',,to. Montreal, fqr the British jGovej-uineiit. Naturally the "divers" were sent in sections. These twelve submarines are now in the service of the Allies. Attempts were made to hush up the departure of the twelve vessels, but the secret leaked out in the Eastern newspapers. The United, States, (Government, however, issued an order forbidding the .submarines .under construction at the Fore Shipbuilding Works for the Allies from leaving the .shipbuilding yards. "j :
