WAVERLEY MEETING. (Notes by Cicero). The annual meeting of the Waverloy Racing Club will be held on Monday. As the day will be observed as a public holiday, a large crowd should gather at the country course. When, one considers the small prizes offered for the open events, the quality of the horses engaged is surprising. In fact, the held engaged is surprising. In fact, the field engaged iu the Brewer Handicap, is'quite a s good as one would expect to siee at a Metropolitan gathering. Of the fourteen engaged in the opening event. Tree Lucerne and Denise Orme x - ead \v ell, Astor (Bst.) is well handicapped, but will be all the better for another gallop or two. The majority of the horses engaged iu the Marton Memorial are quite unknown. Collector, trained by J. Fryer, is considered a likely sort, and is well forward in condition. On Wanganui running, St. Gate appears to have the Hurdles at hi s mercy. If anything extends the Wanganui gelding, it will be Rexer, who showed good form a month ago at Marton and Daunevirke. The “sprinters” engaged iu the Wilson Stakes are not up to the standard of previous years, as a lot depends on the start, and no particularly good
beginners are engaged, the -lace bears a. very open appearance. Veto, Fide}io, and Interlude should run prominently. Of twelve nominated for the Waverlcy Cup, ten accepted, so the event promises to be most interesting. Imarose ran a fine race at Otaki in much superior company, and must be extremely hard to beat. Welcome Nugget finishes like 3 stayer in his races and mav be Imarose’s most dangerous opponent. Eleven good hacks remain in the Hack Flying, Depredation won like a good horse at Wanganui, and is capable of defeating a better class of horse than those opposing him on Monday. Combustion, whose forward running at Otaki and Horewhenua, must not be forgotten, should defeat all others, if Welcome Nugget were reserved for the Moumahaki Stakes, he would have a large following.. In his absence, Melodist should command most support. The large number of nineteen accepted for the Jackson Stakes, Bivouac ran a good race at Wanganui, and with Zion, should run well forward.
