Tlie Germans informed -the people of Mitau that unless Riga was captured they would raze all the towns and villages in the line of retreat. GERMAN LOSSES: AND RUSSIAN ADVANCE. (Received 10.0 a.m.) Geneva, October 22. The Germans near Eckau lost 00 kilometres of trenches, their casualties being 18,000. The Russians in Eastern Galicia are advancing rapidly. RUSSIAN SUCCESSES IN THE GALICIAN CAMPAIGN. (Received 10.30 a.m.) Petrograd, October 22. -A communique states: Our surprise attacks carried part of the enemy’s positions in the Novoalexinetz district, nortward of Tarnopol, also eastward, of Lopuschno. Northward of Novoalexinetz wo captured during the day 148 officers, 7500 men, two howitzers, and a number of machine guns. OPERATIONS ROUND RICA. Petrograd, October 22. - Latest telegrams suggest that German reinforcements are endangering Riga. They have reached Olai, twelve miles from Riga, and heavy fighting is going on on the plateau of Olai, which dominates the marshy plains on both sides of the Mitau-Riga railway. The path of the German advance is hampered by thick woods, intersected with swampy streams. The Germans also reached the Dvina at Borkovity, eighteen miles upstream from Riga.
