SPORTING.
i WELLINGTON SPRING MEETING. (Notes by Cicero.) Tho Wellington Lacing Club received splendid acceptances for their Spring fixture which opens to-morrow. As in former years quite a largo number of Xew Zealand Cup and Stewards' Handicap aspirants will faco the barrier and one should get a good lino as to tho prospects of the majority of probable runners for the Southern "double." Proceedings will be opened by the llimutaka Handicap. Seadown ran two sterling races at Wanganui, and it sure to strip a better horso at Trontham. Under tho circumstances it is difficult to pick one to beat him. Martyress ran a good rare at Masterion, and is evidently on the improve. - Naupata has a big load in the Hack Steeplechase, but stands bead and shoulders over those opposing him. The majority of horses engaged in the Selling Plato arc poor, Hymettius standing in a class by himself. No less than twenty accepted for the Wellington Handicap, including a number of first-class performers. Bonny Helen, Maniaroa, Nones, Montana, Marco Polio all have recent form to recommend them, but the writer likes nothing but Nones, who if not a "lop-noteher," is decidedly above tho average. Montana, and Marco Polio should, bo the filly's most dangerous opponents. A number of brilliant sprinters will lino up lor the Shorts Handicap. Chortle (10.6) is sun", to have, admirers, but I 'cannot .see Ids giving 251bs to Chakwana and 261bs to Three, both of whom are very brilliant over live furlongs, indigo and Montana were omitted from the list of acceptors for the Wainul Handicap. Of the ten still in that event Slogan (8.10) reads well although if Blackall is within two stone of what many of his admirers say he ought to hav 0 ft
simple task before him. Egypt and ilybius have experience and form as a recommendation for the Wellesley Stakes. The first day's programme will be brought to close with the Scurry for which event Happiness and Botanist should command respect.
