STRATFORD GUN CLUB.
A DAY WITH THE "CLAYS." Under new auspices the Stratford Gun Club held a very successful opening day's shoot on the A. and P. Association's grounds yesterday, when a number of sweepstakes were competed for, representatives being present from Wanganui, Waitara, Hawera, Eltham Midhirst, besides the local shootists who turned' out to support the new Club in creditable numbers. The weather was on the windy side for the snort, but the light being excellent some very good scores were registered. There was no formal opening, but during the day. Mr A. Stewart, president, was present, and on behalf of the Club heartily welcomed the visitors. The handicapping wa s in '.be hands oi Mr W. J. Hamblyn, and the referee was Mr'J. M. Shotter, both of whom (rave universal satisfaction throughout. ing. Proceedings opened before mid-day with a sweepstake for eight birds, for which there were eight competitors, the winner turning up in H. Harrison (15yds) with a score of 7, J. Wheeler (Eltham, loyds) second with o, and W. Woolveu (Wanganui) and J. Carter (Midhirst) a tie for third with four birds ccch. Another sweepstake on the same conditions brought forth fourteen competitors, the result being i tie between Brown (Mahoe) 13yds, \\ T . J). Colson (Stratford) 10yds. and W. Wool von (18yds) who secured seven birds each, and cut up the stake and shot off. the places coming out in the ibove oi-der. In the open sweepstake 10 birds) tbere were eighty shooters. Alf. Line-ham (Midhirst) 16yds and L. Fowler (Waitara) 14yds tieing with 14 )irds each, and F. Whittle (18yds) and I. Harrison (16yds) each securing 13, nd they divided the money. A furher sweepstake (ten birds) saw eleven step on to their marks, and there was i very interesting competition. H. Harrison off 'l6yds won outright, lecturing nine out of the total, with E. T. Kirkwood (Hyds), W. D. Colson (11yds), and W. Woolven (.16yds) eight birds each, the three dividing. Of the remaining seven competitors, five had leven birds to their credit. Refreshments were provided by the 'Jlub, which deserves credit for the .uccess of the meeting, and judging by .he enthusiasm of those present there seems to be no doubt that future programmes on similar lines will also be Appreciated by shootists from far and tear. Already steps are beihg taken to hold a Club shoot in the near aiture, prizes for competitions having leing promised in several cases.
