The District High School cricket team play their first match of the season on Monday against the New Plymonth Technical College, at Inglewood. The team has a fair amount of promising material and hope to improve their last year's record. The main fault is the lack of steady hatsmen and left-hand 'bowlers. Most of the batsmen are of the "hit hard and often" type, and should give a good account of themselves if they should get "set." In Macdonald the school possess a bowler of exceptional ability. The team .for Monday is: R. MacDonald (captain). E. R. Co'utts, C. H. Stephenson, A. W. Tatton,. H. J. Mail, T. Stoddart, A. X. Auld, G. Eiinis, J. C. Hall. C. A. Lawn, W. Dean.
Judgment by default was given in i defended civil action at the Strat-
ford Magistrate's Court this morning, when Manoy and Hassall (Mr P. Thomson), claimed £3 from Dan | Davis (Air Rutherfurd). Defendant, j who previously resided at Whanga, 1 was alleged to have bought goods to ' the value of £3, and left New Zealand J without making provision for payment. In giving judgment lor the amount claimed, £3, with Court costs Bs, witnesses expenses 7s 3d, and £1 6s solicitor's fees, the Magistrate remarked that lie found no fault with plaintiff and his solicitor, and the summons had been issued in plenty of time. 'fho' distrust may submit each new claim to dispute, Unanimity ever prevails, Where years of integrity build the repute Of a medicine that always avails. Such decisions are rare, and the sceptics beware Lest vile frauds should their favour allure; For they know the sad dearth in such treasures of worth As Woods' Great Peppermint Cure.
In connection with the Bed Crosi collection to-morrow, a wether pre sented by Mr G. Sangster \vl!l be auc-» tioned at Xewton King's sale to-mow row. Opportunities to help our soldiers are illimitable, a.s the depth of practicability has never been probed. Among the kindly acts to the credit of the women of New Zealand must be reckoned the work of the girls, the young girla still in their teens, and those, even, who are not yet quite that age. Today a "Post" reporter was shown the contents of a box of "eomfys," representing the year's work of the girls of Standard V. and YJ. at the Stratford School, under Miss Pearce, which" was on its way to the Mayoress (Mrs J. W. Boon) as a contribution to the Wounded Soldiers. The list was comprised of the following: Four Balaclava caps, four mittens, three pairs of bed socks, and fourteen mufflers. The quality of the consignment, both from the point of view of the workmanship and the material, was quit© evident, and the girls are deserving of much thanks for their valuable gifts "to the cause which needs assistance and the good that all can do."
